Aged care in Liverpool

In-home and community aged care delivered across Liverpool and the surrounding suburbs, with carers matched on language, gender preference and culture.

What ageing in Liverpool actually looks like

Liverpool is a city rather than a suburb, and that changes what older residents need from us. The hospital, the specialists, the pathology, the council, the library and the shopping are all inside a few blocks, which is a real advantage right up until the day someone can no longer manage a busy centre on their own.

The other defining feature is language. At the 2021 Census, Arabic was the most commonly spoken language at home in Liverpool after English, and a large share of older residents speak little or no English at all. A great deal of our Liverpool work is simply making the aged care system navigable in someone's own language, and then keeping it that way once services start.

The homes here

Everything from post-war brick and fibro homes in the older streets to a dense band of newer apartment towers near the station and the hospital. The two produce entirely different care plans: yards, steps and long driveways on one side, intercoms, lifts and small bathrooms on the other.

Community and language

At the 2021 Census the most commonly spoken languages at home after English were Arabic, Serbian, Vietnamese, Hindi and Urdu, and roughly a quarter of residents spoke only English. Arabic-speaking, gender-matched carers are our most frequent request here and we can usually match them. For the other languages we will tell you honestly at referral whether we can match consistently, because a carer who speaks the language once is not the same as one who speaks it every week.

What we are asked for most in Liverpool

  • Arabic-speaking, gender-matched personal care
  • Help with My Aged Care assessments and paperwork in Arabic
  • Registered nurse clinical care after a Liverpool Hospital discharge
  • Transport and accompanied activities into the town centre

We deliver the full Support at Home service list here, across clinical and allied health, personal and social support and home and daily living. You can model what your budget covers with our pricing calculator before speaking to anyone.

Questions from Liverpool families

Asked locally

Can you support someone coming home from Liverpool Hospital?

Yes, and it is a large part of our Liverpool work. Tell us before the discharge date if you possibly can. The first fortnight at home carries the highest risk of readmission, and having nursing, personal care and a safe bathroom in place before someone walks through the door changes that materially.

My mother speaks no English. Can this be done in Arabic from start to finish?

Yes. We can speak with you in Arabic, work through the My Aged Care questions with you before the assessment so nothing is lost in translation on the day, and match Arabic-speaking carers afterwards. If a gender-matched carer is also needed, say so at referral and we will match both together rather than one at a time.

Around the suburb

Where we take people in Liverpool

Liverpool concentrates almost everything into a few blocks, which is an advantage right up until someone can no longer manage a busy centre alone.

Bigge Park

Bigge Street, in the centre of town

Central, flat and green, with the war memorial at its heart. It breaks a trip into town into two halves with somewhere to sit in between, which is often all that is needed for the trip to keep happening.

Yellamundie Library and Gallery

52 Scott Street

The city's main library, and it runs a Home Library Service that delivers to residents who cannot get in because of mobility or health. We can help arrange that rather than let reading quietly stop.

Macquarie Mall and Westfield Liverpool

Macquarie Street

Level, undercover and close together, with the specialists and pathology most people need in the same few streets. Combining an appointment with one useful errand is how we keep a day from becoming two separate exhausting outings.

Getting to any of these sits under accompanied activities or direct transport. Both are funded services, not favours. If there is somewhere else that matters to the person you are calling about, tell us and we will build the week around that instead.

From first call to first visit

Four steps, and we do most of the work

You do not need a diagnosis, a plan number or the right words. Tell us what is happening and we will work out the rest with you.

  1. 1Talk to usCall, email or send a referral. We ask about the person, the household and what a good week looks like, not just which services you are funded for.
  2. 2Care planningWe review needs, budget and preferences together, and set out exactly which supports we would provide, on which days, at what cost.
  3. 3Matching your carerWe match a carer on language, gender preference, cultural fit and availability, then brief them properly on your household before the first visit.
  4. 4Services startSupport begins on the agreed schedule with the same carer wherever possible. We check in early, then keep checking in.
